The Blue Waters and Dry Tortugas NP-Florida

Visited- Dec 2017

Key West Florida had been on our minds for a few years now, especially since that is a much sought after tourist destination in the the state of Florida. The state also happens to be very hot except in Dec and Jan when the temperatures are a little bit better(for me). Key West is all about outdoors, and anything in excess of 23deg C or 73deg F is not a friendly weather for outdoor activities for me.

Now going to Key West isn't enough if you want to experience the magic of the turquoise, and emerald green waters. 'The Dry Tortugas National Park' . We were thrilled to be able to visit this rare island on Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off of Key West Florida. Also that we managed to plan our visit including getting tickets for the sea plane trip at the first go. It's tricky to reach here. There are very few slots available (there's a cap on the number of visitors in a day)  n hence difficult. Also it's not connected by road

The island is a home to  Fort Jefferson is a massive but unfinished coastal fortress. It is the largest brick  masonry structure in the Americas, and is composed of over 16 million bricks, the building alone occupying 16 acres. Fort Jefferson can be reached by a daily ferry from Key West, as well as by chartered seaplane and private yacht. As a national park, primitive camping is permitted on the beach. Visitors by ferry typically spend 4 hours on the island, which is enough time for a guided tour of the fort, lunch on the boat, and a swim (snorkel equipment provided) on the reef. Within the fort is a museum, and bookstore, but no food or drink are available for purchase.

We being very amateur at taking beach trips, (we are such mountain people!) did not carry anything in terms of mats or dhurries to sit on. thankfully we did take beach foot wear at least. It was a 4 hour  round trip from the Key est International airport. 45 minutes flying time each side, and 2 hrs 30 mins at the island. The weather at about 19-20 deg C was just spectacular ad the skies were bright and clear (mostly).

They also have ferries doing the same trip, but its an 8 hrs round tip but about ten times cheaper that a sea plane. So if you have a day or two for Key West, not visiting Dry Tortugas NP will be a waste, and I mean it. That is the closest to what will get with experiencing the colors of the Caribbean waters in the United States! It's a gem indeed. While Key West is awesome, Dry Tortugas surpasses that awesomeness and take sit to a whole different level of beauty.

Here's the website that you can go to for booking your tickets to the ferry or Sea plane.Remember there's this one company that operates into this National park and back.
